映画祭最終日、授賞式の最後に、「唐津国際映画祭」エグゼクティブプロデューサーの甲斐田晴子よりお伝えさせていただいたスピーチ全文をご紹介させていただきます。

At the conclusion of the festival ceremony, we are pleased to share the full text of the speech delivered by Haruko Kaida, Executive Producer of the Karatsu International Film Festival.

The Karatsu International Film Festival has finally reached its grand finale. Starting from July 8 and running for six days until today, we sincerely thank everyone for accompanying us until the end.

This film festival marks the fifth festival since we held the Short Film Festival in 2021, but it is the first international film festival solely organized by our cinema, Theater Enya.

From submissions to the first round of judging, nominations, translations, and subtitle insertions, as well as arranging for international nominees to come to Japan, workshops, and hospitality projects, the work involved in hosting this festival far exceeded our imagination. However, beyond the rewards of that effort, we encountered wonderful works. Additionally, it is a great honor that many international films had their premiere screenings at this festival.

As can be seen from the results of this year’s awards, it is a fact that the films from abroad had overwhelming strength. I felt that this came from a philosophical approach to how to depict humanity, a keen observational eye on society and the world, and a difference in breadth of perspective.

We have the power to create beautiful poetry even amidst gunfire, and the heart to dream of going to space in the midst of an unreasonable daily life. Movies teach us that while the world is filled with unfairness and absurdity, people can live resiliently without forgetting to dance and sing, and that the soul is free in any environment.

The charm of an international film festival lies in the ability for people from various nations to experience diverse visual works in the same space.

Film has the power to instantly dispel the prejudices and preconceptions about a country, culture, or people that we unknowingly form through media, allowing us to imagine those differences richly and freely.

It also prompts us to question what it means to live, what it means to be human, and what love and peace are.

Currently, Japan is facing a declining population and an aging society, and amidst economic stagnation, we are seeking light. However, when we watch movies from around the world, we are still in a state of richness and peace. In this context, I have also been deeply prompted to think about how Japanese people will live moving forward and the role we should play in the world.

Currently, news of genocide is arriving daily from the Gaza Strip. While this festival received wonderful films from Iran, the filmmakers were unable to come to Japan due to airport closures caused by the war.

I believe that film has the power to cultivate the human spirit, enrich the imagination of all people, and inform us that each of us is filled with infinite possibilities and love. I also believe that this can become a force for peace in the world.

I hope that our film festival will continue to provide courage and build a wonderful network for those who will create films in the future, and that the beautiful local city of Karatsu in Japan will be communicated to the world, contributing even a little to humanity’s peace.

Finally, I would like to express my deep gratitude and respect to all the filmmakers who delivered wonderful visuals and to everyone who worked hard to make this festival a reality.

Our journey has only just begun. I hope that one day, Karatsu will be known not only as a city rich in traditional culture but also as a town with a beautiful film festival, and I want to continue to work hard towards that dream.

唐津国際映画祭もいよいよフィナーレを迎えました。7月8日から始まり、今日まで6日間皆さん最後まで伴走頂き誠にありがとうございました。

今回の映画祭は、私達が、2021年にショートフィルム映画祭を開催して以来、5回目となる映画祭ですが、私達の映画館シアターエンヤが単独で主催する国際映画祭としては初めての映画祭となりました。

応募から一次審査、ノミネート、更に翻訳や字幕の挿入、海外ノミネート者の来日手配、ワークショップやおもてなし企画など、本映画祭を開催するにあたっては、想像を遥かに超えた作業がありました。しかし、その努力が報われる以上に、素晴らしい作品との出会いがありました。更に、海外作品の多くが、本映画祭がプレミア上映であったことは、大変栄誉あることだと思っています。

今回のアワードの結果を見てもわかるように、国外勢の映画が圧倒的に力があったことも事実です。それは、技術の問題以上に、人間をどう描くのかという哲学、社会や世界への観察眼の鋭さ、視野の広さの違いからくるものである、と感じました。

銃撃戦の繰り広げられる中でも、美しい詩を生むことができる、一見救いのないような日常の中に宇宙を夢見ることができる心を持つことができる、世の中は不公平で、理不尽であるという事実と共に、人間はたくましく、踊り歌うことを忘れずに生きることができる、そしてどんな環境の中でも魂は自由たりえるという事実を教えてくれているようでした。

国際映画祭の魅力は、世界の様々な映像作品を多国籍の人々が、同じ空間で映像体験ができることです。

映画は、私達が知らず知らずのうちにメディアによって作られたその国や文化、人々への偏見や先入観を、一瞬で吹き飛ばし、その違いについて、私達に豊かに自由に想像させます。

そして、生きるとは何か、人間であるということはどういうことか、愛とは、平和とは何かについて問いかけます。

私達は日本という島国の中で、人口減少や少子高齢化、経済の減退など閉塞感のある中でもがき、光を求めていますが、世界の映像を見ると、それでも私達は豊かさと平和の中にあるのだという事も事実です。そこで、自らの呪縛を解き放ち、本来の自分であること、自らを愛することを恐れずにいること、そして、日本人が世界の中で果たすべき役割について、深く考えさせられる映画祭でもありました。

今、ガザ地区からは、ジェノサイドのニュースが毎日のように届きます。
そして、本映画祭には、イランから素晴らしい映画が届けられましたが、映画製作者は、戦争による空港封鎖により来日が叶う事がありませんでした。

私は、映画には人間の精神を耕し、あらゆる人々への想像力を豊かにし、私達1人1人には無限の可能性と愛が満ち溢れていることを知らせる力があると感じます。そしてそれは、世界を平和にする力になると信じています。

私達の映画祭が、これから映画を作る人たちにとって、これからも映像作品を作り続ける勇気と、素晴らしいネットワークの構築につながり、また、唐津という日本の美しい地方都市が世界に発信されると同時に、人類の平和に少しでも繋がっていくことを願い、祈ります。

最後にもう一度、素晴らしい映像を届けて下さった映画製作者の皆さまと、映画祭の実現に尽力し伴走していただいたあらゆる皆さまに、深い感謝と敬意を表し、私の挨拶としたいと思います。

私達の歩みは始まったばかりです。
唐津といえば、伝統と文化の豊かな日本の都市というだけではなく、美しい映画祭のある町として世界に知られる日が来ることを夢見て、これからも頑張っていきたいと思います。
